Employment Update - October 2010

Tribunal Statistics for 2009/10 Published

The Tribunals Service and Ministry of Justice have published annual statistics for the Em-ployment Tribunal and EAT for the period 1 April 2009 to 31 March 2010. The statistics show:

  • The number of claims submitted increased by 56% since 2008/09, largely as a result of multiple claims which increased by nearly 90%.
  • Just under a quarter of claims were working time claims: largely multiple-claimant airline industry cases that are re-submitted every three months.

The report includes detailed analysis of the amount of compensation awarded in various types of claim, including the average and maximum awards. It also provides information on the average and maximum amounts awarded for costs.

Equality Act 2010

Most parts of the Equality Act 2010 come into force on 1 October 2010. The Equality Act 2010 replaces the previous discrimination legislation in Great Britain concerning sex, race, disability, sexual orientation, religion or belief and age.
